Home for the Holidays

Dec 17, 2018 - Lauren Rich

Each year the Nichols team takes some time off at the end of December. After a successful year of project creation and management, we allow ourselves to kick-back and recharge our creative batteries as we prepare for the New Year. We’ve found that stepping away from our day-to-day routines revitalizes us all, so we return in the New Year ready to jump back into work with renewed enthusiasm and fresh perspectives. For the last 20+ years, this has shown to be beneficial for our company and clients, and now we know why!

Science suggests that a little bit of relaxation may improve focus and initiate fresh ideas. Recent studies have shown that a break from the office might be just the thing you need to improve productivity and refresh creativity. Based on a study by researchers at Nico Bunzeck and Emrah Düzel, becoming complacent in your daily routine can actually suppress your enthusiasm to explore and understand.

Another study that was conducted by Positivity author Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, showed that when you feel relaxed you’re more likely to think outside the box. One example of this? Lin-Manuel Miranda and the inspiration behind his Broadway hit Hamilton.

In 2007, Lin-Manuel was enjoying a trip to Mexico when he picked up Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton. What happened next was history. Miranda acknowledges the connection between getting away and his creative urge to create the play, stating, “It’s no accident that the best idea I’ve ever had in my life — perhaps maybe the best one I’ll ever have in my life — came to me on vacation … The moment my brain got a moment’s rest, ‘Hamilton’ walked into it.”

So, go ahead and take a break this holiday season. Who knows? The creative inspiration you find may just be the next Hamilton!

And don’t forget to give us a call so that we can help re-energize your brand marketing with fresh creative and strategy this upcoming year.
